How to Get a Marriage License in New York City

Couples planning to exchange their vows in New York City must obtain a marriage license from the Office of the City Clerk. To streamline the process, you can complete the application online before visiting the office. When you apply in person, be sure to bring a valid ID (from any state) and the $35 license fee, payable by credit card or money order to the City Clerk. Please note that all applicants must be over 18.

The couple should have at least one witness with a proper ID (must be over 18). You will already have your marriage license on hand, once you leave the Office of the City Clerk. If you have made a mistake while filling in the application – don’t worry. You can easily correct it for free within the first 24 hours or later on for a small fee.

After obtaining a marriage license, you would have to wait for at least 24 hours to tie the knot. However, do bear in mind that the license is valid for 60 days. So, you have exactly two months to get married anywhere within New York State.

Choosing the Best Season to Get Married in NYC

New York is a magnificent place to tie the knot, but make sure to choose your wedding date wisely.

Without any doubt, fall is the peak wedding season. The city is full of gorgeous, colorful foliage, and the temperatures are pleasant. According to The Knot’s survey, 38% of wedding couples have chosen to have their big day in the fall. The runner-up is summer. Though in some parts of the state, the sunny season is at the top of the list. During summer, the city is packed with people, but, most of the time, it’s nice and warm. Spring is a lovely, photogenic season when you’ll get a chance to take advantage of the beautiful blooms. If you want to plan everything indoors or don’t mind cold weather, you can go for a majestic winter celebration. Snowy wedding photos have their own inimitable atmosphere and look magical.

Of course, there are certain dates that you better avoid, if you don’t want to make the whole planning process more challenging. Typically, you should try to stay away from any festivities – New Year’s, St. Patrick’s Day Parade, Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, and so on. Because of the crowds, it will be difficult to find hotel rooms (and traveling is much more expensive).

Which NYC Wedding Venue is Right for You?

With so many stunning wedding venues to choose from in New York City, it can be overwhelming to decide which one is the right fit for your special day. From grand ballrooms and historic landmarks to lush gardens and modern rooftop terraces, each venue has its unique charm and appeal.

To choose the perfect venue, consider your personal style, budget, and the overall vibe you want to create for your wedding. Do you envision a romantic outdoor ceremony surrounded by nature or a glamorous reception in a luxurious ballroom? Are you looking for a venue with sweeping skyline views or a historic building with architectural significance?

Another important factor to consider is the size of your guest list. Make sure the venue you choose can comfortably accommodate all of your guests, and that there is enough space for the dance floor, food stations, and other key elements of your reception.

Ultimately, the right NYC wedding venue for you will depend on your unique preferences and priorities. Take the time to research different venues, visit them in person, and ask questions to ensure that you find the perfect location to say “I do” and celebrate your love.
